Ready to Reduce Your Pet’s Carbon Pawprint?
They may be small and not require a whole lot of stuff, but dogs and cats do produce their own carbon pawprints. Fortunately it’s easy to help your pet get his or her eco on with these tips that are healthy for animals and the planet.
1. Opt for ecofriendly kitty litter, biodegradable poop bags and/or a pet waste composter. Ecofriendly, nonclumping clay litter is healthier for you, your cat and the planet. Biodegradable poop bags and composters will minimize landfill impacts from nonbiodegradable plastics.
2. Avoid preventing pests with chemicals unless you must. Instead, research when pests are most likely in your region and, if you have to, treat with tick or flea products sparingly during months your pet is most at risk.
3. Opt for nontoxic cleaners to clear pet messes. Look for enzyme-based formulas that work by breaking down stains and odor-causing offenders. Don’t be fooled by strong-smelling solutions such as ammonia and vinegar. These will mask the problem rather than resolve it.
4. Choose wholesome pet food. Most pet foods come from animals raised conventionally with antibiotics, hormones and nonorganic feed. If possible, switch your pet’s diet to include more organic plant proteins (such as pea or bean proteins) or opt for pet foods made from organic or sustainably raised meats.
Enjoy your furry friend while treading lightly on the earth!
